Welcome to your EIGHTH LESSON IN VEHEVIONIAN
Now that you know how to conjugate verbs in the present tense, let’s cover the past and future tenses.
Thankfully, Vehevionian tense formation is very regular compared to languages such as English and French; you simply start with the present conjugation and add an ending specific to that tense. So, once you know the present, learning the other tenses becomes much easier.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Past Tense:
Used to describe actions that already happened, the past tense is one of the easiest tenses in Vehevionian!
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Regular Verbs Past Conjugation:
To form the past tense for regular verbs, you keep the present tense conjugation and then:
if the conjugation ends in a consonant, add -en
if the conjugation ends in a vowel, add -n
Example:
Hamete (to give)
Hametesen
Hametein
Hameteten
Hametewin
Hametesin
Hametenten
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Different Irregular Verbs Past Conjugation:
These verbs follow the exact same rule, no exceptions!
Example:
Lurehe (to go)
Lurehosen
Lurehain
Lurehaten
Lurehawin
Lurehasin
Lurehonten
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Divergent Irregular Verbs Past Conjugation:
These verbs are slightly more complex than the other two types. You first start with the present tense conjugation, and then, you have two options for conjugating the past tense.
If the infinitive verb contains any letter before the ending -teo other than ‘o’ or ‘a’, you add:
-ine after consonants
-ne after vowels
Example:
Dormeteo (to sleep)
Dormetosine
Dormeteine
Dormetetine
Dormetewine
Dormetesine
Dormetyntine
The A/O Rule:
For the divergent irregulars that contain ‘a’ or ‘o’ before -teo, add:
-one after consonants
-ne after vowels
Example:
Geoteo (to create)
Geoteosone
Geoteoine
Geoteotone
Geoteowine
Geoteosine
Geoteontone
This spelling rule evolved into the language because it makes the pronunciation of the word slightly easier.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
The Future Tense:
Used for actions that haven’t happened yet/will happen, the future tense is the easiest tense in Vehevionian!
Regular Verbs Future Conjugation:
For these verbs, you simply add:
-é
to the present tense conjugation. Simple!
Example:
Seve (to look at/to see)
Sevesé
Seveié
Seveté
Sevewié
Sevesié
Seventé
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Different Irregular Verbs
These verbs use the exact same rule. Simply add ‘é’ to the end of the present tense conjugation.
Example: Liehe (to live/to live in)
Liehosé
Liehaié
Liehaté
Liehawié
Liehasié
Liehonté
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Divergent Irregular Verbs
You may think that divergent irregulars will have some weird rules this time, but the only thing different about them is that instead of adding:
-é
They always add:
-oé
This goes for all divergent irregulars (including those with ‘a’ or ‘o’ before -teo)
Example:
Allautteo (to fall)
Allauttosoé
Allautteioé
Allauttetoé
Allauttewioé
Allauttesioé
Allauttyntoé
Puinateo (to melt, merge, blend)
Puinateosoé
Puinateoioé
Puinateotoé
Puinateowioé
Puinateosioé
Puinateontoé
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
IMPORTANT: In conversation, texting, informal writing, etc., many people forget about the ‘o’ and just use ‘é’ at the end for divergent irregulars. The forms in the textbook are the standard formal forms of modern Vehevionian. As a result, spoken Vehevionian might sound slightly different than what is presented in these lessons.
