HOW WAS VEHEVIONIAN CREATED?

Vehevionian began in 2022 in 7th grade. My friend and I were calling one night, talking about a French project we had. We asked each other questions to help us study, but we ended up going on a tangent and started curiously discussing the structures of different languages. This conversation is what sparked the creation of Vehevionian.

That night, I wasn’t intending on creating an entire fictional language, let alone a world behind it. I was just interested about the patterns that emerge from languages across the world. Why do languages develop different grammatical structures? How do words evolve over time? How do writing systems and alphabets emerge? How do those systems influence the different cultures that use them? As I started writing down the first few words of Vehevionian, I realized something valuable. What I thought was just a simple childhood curiosity for creating a language was a part of a much deeper interest in exploring the systems that humans use.

As I continued to build the language, I found exploring the infinite possibilities of language construction fascinating. I added grammatical tools from multiple languages such as English, French, Korean, Bulgarian, and Greenlandic, and even added my own subjects like semi-verbs and grammatical color later on.

After I had written a substantial amount of the language, I realized something else. A language can’t just exist. It has to have a people who speak it, a history that it has lived through, and an environment that surrounds it. So, after almost a year of writing, I found myself creating the world that surrounds Vehevionian as well.

Over the next three years, Vehevionian grew from just 14 basic words into a fully developed language and civilization. It now contains original and adopted grammar systems, a unique writing system, thousands of words, and a history and civilization surrounding it.

What is Vehevionian?

Vehevionian is a constructed language (conlang) spoken in the future civilization of Vahevvea. I’ve been working on it as a passion project outside of school since 7th grade. It includes its own grammar, writing system, vocabulary, and history.

Why WAS VEHEVIONIANC createD?

Vehevionian was created because it was an outlet for me to explore my fascination with languages—how they work, evolve, and begin. Although originally I didn’t plan for it to grow more than 100 words, it gradually grew into a complete linguistic and worldbuilding project!

How long did it take to create?

Vehevionian has been continuously developed for more than three years, and still evolves every day with revisions and the addition of new vocabulary, grammar, and history.

How large is the language?

Is Vehevionian based on a real language?

Vehevionian intentionally includes elements from several existing languages such as English, French, Bulgarian, Greenlandic, and Korean. However, a majority of the language still includes grammar, vocabulary, and structures unique to Vehevionian.

Can I actually learn Vehevionian?

Yes! Vehevionian is purposefully constructed in a way that the fundamentals are easy to understand and remember. The Lessons section of this website includes several introductory modules covering the basics of the language.

What is the Vewattique?

The Vewattique is the writing system/alphabet of Vehevionian. It has over 50 symbols and is designed to be easy to learn and to represent the sounds and structure of the language.

What is Vahevvea?

Vahevvea is the fictional country I created which exists over a century in the future. The history of the country (detailed on the history page) was intentionally created to give a coherent background for Vehevionian and to explain why it includes elements from different languages while simultaneously including its own vocabulary!

Is Vehevionian still being developed?

Absolutely! New words, historicy, cultural information, and linguistic features continue to be added regularly.

What has been the hardest part of creating Vehevionian?

The hardest part about creating Vehevionian was maintaining consistency within the language. It wasn’t that I had to remember which words I created and which ones I still had to develop, it was that I always had to refer back to the grammar I had devloped and use it properly when constructing new parts of the textbook. As the project grew, it became difficult to keep track. Translating texts into Vehevionian was also a challenge because then, I had to use the entire textbook for accuracy, not just two or three units.

What’s the POINT of vehevionian?

I hope Vehevionian encourages people to explore the diverse world of languages. Whether you’re interested in the formation of new languages, the structure of existing ones, or preserving endangered ones, I hope that it evokes interest in learning about language, and in turn, learning about the world.
